40 fire-risk Sharjah towers to get Dh100m cladding
Sharjah is spending Dh100 million on a project to install fire-safe cladding on 40 “high-risk” residential buildings and commercial towers in the emirate. Engineer Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Services at Sharjah Municipality, said that the fire-prevention project will replace flammable aluminum facades of buildings with fire-resistant claddings. The project was approved by Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. “The safety of our residents is our top priority and we have been working diligently to identify and replace any flammable cladding in the emirate’s buildings,” Al Suwaidi told Sharjah Radio and TV. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in six months. Sharjah has seen several major fires in the last decade. In May 2020, the Abbco Tower was razed by a rapidly spreading fire fueled by its flammable cladding.
