Sharjah Police is urging motorists to follow crucial safety measures to prevent vehicle fires during the hot summer months. This call to action comes after a recent incident where the Sharjah Civil Defence swiftly extinguished a car fire in Sharjah’s Industrial Area. The fire broke out around 7:30am on Monday (September 2) when a small vehicle caught fire on a main road. Upon receiving the emergency call, firefighting teams, police patrols, and a National Ambulance were dispatched immediately. The Civil Defence team managed to extinguish the flames within two minutes, preventing injuries and further damage. The area was then cooled to prevent any potential flare-ups, and the vehicle was safely removed to ensure traffic safety. In light of this incident, Sharjah Police emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to avoid such emergencies. The police force advised all drivers to keep their vehicles in good condition, especially in the extreme summer heat, which can increase the risk of engine overheating and electrical malfunctions that may lead to fires. Motorists must carry a fire extinguisher in their vehicles at all times as a precautionary measure.

Ordinary items that are fire hazards

Many drivers may not realize that everyday items kept in their cars can pose significant fire risks, especially in hot weather. These include: Aerosol cans: Items such as deodorants, hairsprays, and air fresheners are highly flammable and can explode if left in a hot car. Hand sanitizers: Many hand sanitizers contain alcohol, which is flammable and can ignite if exposed to high temperatures or sparks. Lighters and matches: These are obvious fire hazards that can ignite easily in a hot car, especially if there is a leak or if they are not stored properly. Batteries: Loose batteries, such as spare ones for electronic devices, can cause fires if they come into contact with metal objects and create a spark. Sunglasses and magnifying glasses: While not flammable, they can concentrate sunlight and potentially cause materials in the car to ignite.

Tips to avoid car fire hazards

Regular vehicle maintenance: Ensure routine checks of your vehicle's engine, electrical system, and fuel lines to prevent fires caused by overheating or faulty wiring. Inspect for leaks: Regularly check for oil, fuel, or coolant leaks that can ignite when in contact with hot engine parts. Avoid overloading: Overloading can strain the engine and electrical system, increasing the risk of fires. Dispose of smoking materials safely: Avoid keeping cigarettes or matches in the vehicle, as they can ignite flammable materials. Carry a fire extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher in your car and know how to use it in an emergency.
