A motorist in Sharjah has been arrested for using fake number plates and committing a staggering 137 traffic violations amounting to Dh104,730 in fines, authorities announced. According to Sharjah Police, the suspect was tracked using advanced security surveillance systems deployed across internal and external roads. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the driver had altered the vehicle’s plates to avoid being identified by traffic monitoring systems. Colonel Omar Mohammed Bu Ghanem, Deputy Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Sharjah Police, confirmed the arrest was the result of “effective coordination between field traffic personnel and the command and control centre.” “The vehicle was monitored by advanced security surveillance systems... which enabled specialised teams to identify the vehicle whose driver had deliberately installed number plates different from those officially registered with traffic authorities,” he said. “Close field monitoring helped the teams track the vehicle’s route, arrest the driver and impound the vehicle.” Further investigations showed that the motorist had accumulated 308 black points and that the impoundment period for the vehicle had exceeded 764 days. Col. Bu Ghanem warned that tampering with or forging number plates is a serious criminal offense. “Certain behaviours such as installing forged number plates or obscuring number plates are not regarded simply as traffic violations but can turn into criminal cases requiring legal accountability,” he said.
