Sharjah grocery owners support ban on single-use plastics
Residents and grocery store owners in Sharjah applaud the emirate's decision to ban single-use plastic bags starting on January 1, 2024. Residents have been given adequate time by the authorities to convert to reusable bags. When the rule goes into effect on October 1 of this year, retail establishments will charge customers 25 fils for each single-use plastic bag. The amount of bags used will be significantly reduced, according to Shamshuddin, the proprietor of a grocery store in Sharjah's Dawar Al Madinah, Al Nahda. The grocery uses about 500 bags daily for deliveries and takeaways, which amounts to about Dh30. As the grocery has a large number of home deliveries that need to be packed in plastic bags, the store is set to find alternatives when the rule is enforced, Shamshuddin explained. According to Rafiq from Ashjar Supermarket, they order 10 kilograms of plastic bags weekly. "Some weeks, the usage of plastics bags is considerably high. The average usage is about 40 kgs a month," said Rafiq. "I think people get into the habit of bringing their own bags once the 25 fils charge comes into force," added Rafiq.
