The UAE has once again crossed the 50°C threshold, with temperatures in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, peaking at a blistering 50.2°C at 2pm on Monday (July 14), according to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM). This marks the third time in as many months that temperatures have breached the 50°C mark in the UAE—a worrying trend in a region that experts say is warming nearly twice as fast as the global average. A 2022 Greenpeace study warned that the Middle East, including the UAE, faces an increased risk of extreme heatwaves, water and food scarcity due to climate change. “The region is extremely vulnerable,” the report said. Relief may be on the way. The NCM forecasts a chance of rainfall in the eastern parts of the country on Tuesday (July 15) and Wednesday (July 16), with cumulus clouds expected to form. The UAE is currently under the influence of a weak surface low-pressure system from the east and high-pressure from the west, coupled with weak low-pressure conditions in the upper atmosphere. Winds over the next few days are expected to reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, stirring dust at times. Waves will remain regular to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
