Sharjah hospital bill paid for Filipina who spent savings helping others

DUBAI – A Filipina aneurysm patient in Sharjah who spent her savings helping people in need got her good deeds repaid when her hospital bill was paid by strangers. Gloria Castillo, who has lived in the UAE for 30 years, lost consciousness at her home in Sharjah after suffering from aneurysm. The aneurysm was a blow to Castillo, whom friends and family have described as a hero for sharing her savings to those in need. The Filipina works as a driver with a salary of Dh1,500 per month. On June 2, she suffered cerebral aneurysm and had to undergo surgery. Her hospital bill amounted to Dh26,415, an expense that she currently couldn't afford. “For 30 years my aunt has lived overseas away from home on a mission to help her friends and family, and it seems just so unfair that this tragedy has happened,” said her nephew, Vincent Barnes. “She has been such a hero for all of our family, I only hope that she will make a rapid recovery,” he added. Barnes received a cheque for Dh26,415 from Emirates Loto on Saturday (June 20) to cover Castillo’s hospital bill. ICA/Expat Media
