Sharjah housemaid jumps out of moving car in suicide bid

SHARJAH - A police investigation is underway after a Sri Lankan housemaid attempted to commit suicide by jumping out of a moving car in Sharjah. Police said that the 47-year-old woman, identified only by her initials K.R.W., wanted to leave her employer's house to buy shawarma on her own. The driver, however, did not allow her to leave the premises under the instructions of their Emirati employers who were on holiday. He, however, insisted on driving her to a nearby shop to buy the traditional Emirati sandwich. This reportedly upset the housemaid, who jumped out of the vehicle as they were travelling on the road. Police said the woman suffered fractures and was taken to the hospital for treatment. She is expected to face the charge of attempted suicide. In the UAE, it is illegal to commit suicide, to attempt suicide or to incite someone to commit suicide. Under the Penal Law, a person who attempts suicide is subject to imprisonment of up to six months, or a fine that does not exceed Dh5,000. The court may also hand both jail sentence and fine. Anyone who attempts suicide will be prosecuted before the Misdemeanours Court. GAD/Expat Media
