Oil spill in Sharjah's Kalba beach forces evacuation

  SHARJAH - An oil spill off the coast of the Kalba beach in Sharjah sparked an evacuation of residents in the area, authorities said. The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah on Monday said that the oil spill stretched over 1km off the southern coast of Kalba city. It was not clear where the oil spill originated, although authorities have not ruled out oil leak from tankers, wells or offshore platforms as the cause. The beach area was temporarily evacuated following the incident. There were no reports of injuries. Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, chairperson of EPAA, experts have finished 80 percent of clean-up efforts.
