The beggar who was arrested in Sharjah. SHARJAH POLICE
Sharjah police have arrested a beggar who managed to collect Dh14,000 in just three days by preying on public sympathy near a mosque. Brigadier General Omer Al Ghazal Al Shamsi, Director of the Special Tasks Department and head of the control committee for beggars and street vendors, said the suspect was caught as part of an ongoing anti-begging campaign. "The individual, an Arab national, was reported by a concerned citizen. He was seen approaching worshippers and claiming financial hardship," Al Shamsi said. A Sharjah Police patrol responded and arrested the man, discovering that he was residing illegally in the UAE. Investigations revealed that the beggar had amassed Dh14,000 in just three days. Authorities warned that begging is a security and social concern, with some individuals treating it as a seasonal profession, particularly during Ramadan. As part of its "Begging is a Crime and Giving is a Responsibility" campaign, Sharjah Police has intensified patrols to curb the practice. Residents are urged to report begging cases by calling the toll-free number 80040 or the police call center at 901. Officials also reminded the public that licensed charities are available for those who wish to help people in need.
