Two men have been honoured by Sharjah Police after risking their own lives to rescue a driver trapped inside a car that plunged into the sea following a sudden brake failure. In a statement issued on Tuesday (May 12), Sharjah Police recognised the pair for their swift and courageous actions, describing their response as an example of bravery and community responsibility. Brigadier Ibrahim Al Ajel, Director-General of the General Department of Comprehensive Police Stations, said the incident unfolded after the vehicle reportedly skidded off the road and plunged into the water due to sudden brake failure. The police operations room immediately received an emergency report and dispatched specialised rescue teams to the scene. Before emergency responders arrived, the two men sprang into action after noticing the driver was trapped inside the sinking vehicle and unable to escape. Officials said the driver was unable to open the vehicle doors or break the glass to free himself as the car began sinking. Without hesitation, the two rescuers jumped into the sea and managed to pull the driver to safety moments before the situation turned fatal. Brigadier Al Ajel praised their quick thinking and selfless courage. He said their actions reflected “the values of bravery, the spirit of community responsibility and humanitarian cooperation in responding to emergency situations.” “Their response demonstrates the deeply rooted values of solidarity and social responsibility that define our community,” he said. The two men expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying their actions were motivated by instinct and a sense of humanitarian duty. They said helping others in moments of danger reflects the UAE’s culture of cooperation and compassion.
