In a major technological leap, Sharjah Police has introduced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart patrol vehicles capable of real-time facial recognition and automatic traffic monitoring. The high-tech patrol cars feature advanced surveillance systems designed to detect violations such as speeding, phone use while driving, and even smoking behind the wheel. Equipped with smart cameras and AI-enabled sensors, the vehicles can instantly scan license plates and cross-check facial recognition data against police databases. “These smart patrols will enhance public safety and improve traffic law enforcement across the emirate,” said Major Dr. Saeed Bin Hada, Head of the Innovation Branch at Sharjah Police. The system, currently in its trial phase, will be rolled out gradually with phased upgrades. The AI-powered patrols are linked to a central police operations room, allowing officers to track vehicles, identify high-risk drivers, and take swift action when necessary. If the system detects a flagged individual, authorities are alerted immediately for prompt intervention. Mohammad Alay Al Naqbi, Director of the Sharjah Traffic and Patrol Department, emphasized the role of AI in transforming traffic management. “This smart system, developed in collaboration with the Sharjah Transport Authority (RTA), is designed to enhance traffic flow, particularly during emergencies or government convoys,” he explained. One of the key features of the AI-powered system is its ability to synchronize with citywide traffic signals. When an emergency vehicle or high-priority convoy is detected, traffic lights are automatically adjusted to create clear passage, minimizing delays. The system can also respond to real-time emergency reports by activating lane openings to facilitate faster movement for ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles. The AI-powered patrol cars are expected to significantly enhance efficiency by reducing human error and providing 24/7 surveillance.
