Sharjah Police is ramping up traffic enforcement, confiscating around 6,000 motorcycles each month for violating traffic regulations. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard road users and limit the use of non-compliant vehicles on public roads. Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Marzouq Khalfan Al Naqbi, Head of the Traffic and Patrols Department at the Sharjah Police General Command, highlighted the focus on locally known “bu sheraa” motorcycles, bicycles, and electric bikes used outside designated zones. “These motorcycles do not meet traffic safety requirements, posing a danger to their users and others,” Al Naqbi said during an interview on the "Direct Line" program. He noted that the campaign goes beyond seizure, aiming to enhance safety and promote sustainable transport by coordinating with the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority to develop bicycle lanes. “This step will enhance traffic safety and promote a culture of sustainable transportation in the Emirate of Sharjah,” he said. Designated bike paths already exist in areas such as Sea of Al Heera, local parks, and Maliha Street. Police have also collaborated with Bee’ah to recycle confiscated bicycles to prevent resale or illegal reuse. “These measures are part of a comprehensive plan… to provide a safe and organized traffic environment, especially in light of the increasing use of bicycles,” Al Naqbi said.
