Sharjah Police has intensified their efforts to curb distracted driving by deploying advanced smart cameras to catch violators. A newly released video from the authorities highlights multiple instances of motorists using their mobile phones while driving, emphasizing the dangers associated with such reckless behavior. The footage, shared on social media platform X, shows drivers engaged in various activities on their phones, including making calls, texting, browsing, and even recording videos while behind the wheel. “A moment of distraction can lead to disaster,” Sharjah Police warned in their post, urging motorists to remain focused. “Your safety and that of others begins with the right decision.” Under UAE traffic laws, using a mobile phone while driving is a punishable offense, carrying a fine of Dh800 and four black points on the driver's record. The authorities have reiterated that distracted driving significantly increases the risk of serious accidents, potentially endangering not just the driver but also passengers and pedestrians. Sharjah Police have been leveraging advanced technology to enhance road safety, including smart traffic monitoring systems that automatically detect and penalize violators. The police continue to stress that distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of road accidents. “Using a phone while driving reduces your reaction time and diverts your attention from the road, increasing the chances of collisions,” a police spokesperson explained. Authorities have also urged drivers to utilize hands-free devices if necessary but advised that even hands-free conversations can be a distraction. “When you’re driving, your full attention should be on the road. A split-second distraction could be the difference between life and death,” the spokesperson added. Authorities have assured that strict monitoring will continue, with random traffic inspections and enhanced use of AI-powered surveillance systems. ICA/Expat Media
