DUBAI – A Sharjah policeman landed in court after accusations that he took Dh3,000 in bribe to release a wanted man. “That did not happen,” the policeman said, pleading not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday (June 21). The policeman allegedly freed an Indian tailor whom he arrested for staying in the country illegally. The tailor's son told authorities that the policeman called him to ask for a bribe in exchange for his father's freedom. They admitted paying the officer bribe money. Prosecutors charged the defendant of abusing his position as a policeman, accepting bribe and allowing a wanted suspect to evade justice. The policeman's lawyer said the incident was "not what prosecutors have claimed to have had happened" and had asked for an acquittal. He said the policeman had taken custody of the tailor who was arrested by his informant in Dubai. "When he handed him over to Sharjah police, they refused to take him in due to jurisdictional purposes… he was not also tasked to hand him over to the Dubai authorities," the lawyer told the court. He also said that the policeman accompanied the tailor to the Dubai immigration to hand him over, but that immigration officials there refused to take him in because he did not have a return ticket and passport. The policeman became "confused with the situation" and allowed the suspect to walk free, the lawyer told the court. "He did not know what else to do. He did not have any criminal intention. Besides, he did not abuse his authority and allow to walk away since it was not his duty to take him from Sharjah police to Dubai immigration. He was not even commissioned to do that,” the lawyer said.
