As Sharjah prepares to ban single-use plastic bags and materials on January 1, 2024, the emirate's retail outlets have begun charging customers 25 fils for each plastic bag. The new plastic tariff, announced in August, was implemented on October 1. Starting on January 1, 2024, the emirate will prohibit trading, manufacturing, offering, or importing single-use plastic bags and materials. According to a Sharjah Executive Council ordinance, shoppers will be given environmentally friendly alternatives and multi-use bags. The resolution seeks to safeguard the ecosystem from the hazards of plastic pollution. It will promote a sustainable culture among inhabitants by lowering the usage of single-use bags until they are entirely prohibited. According to authorities, the usage of multi-use bags will be restricted by sustainability guidelines. The Department of Municipal Affairs will approve the technical specifications for these bags. Sales outlets must also notify customers about the 25-fil charge, improve their awareness of risks, and advise them on how to use alternatives. Stores are also required to reduce their use of these bags. The resolution comes in response to directions made by Sharjah's Supreme Council Member and Ruler, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. The Department of Municipal Affairs has been tasked with developing plans and procedures to put the prohibition into effect. It will also conduct consumer education programs to assist residents in switching to multi-use and environmentally friendly bags.
