Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has pledged to support an Emirati father who cannot afford the child support ordered by the court. Speaking during a live call on the “Direct Line” radio programme on Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, Sheikh Sultan stressed the importance of ruling with both “the law” and the “spirit of the law.” Responding to a caller named “Umm Muheir,” who demanded imprisonment for a father unable to pay, Sheikh Sultan said: “Assume the father is sincere and truly cannot pay; this imprisonment will prevent him from working and worsen his financial situation. Why not involve me in these matters? If he is sincere and has no means to provide for his children, I am responsible for him.” Sheikh Sultan explained that judges have been directed to verify whether fathers in such cases are genuinely unable to pay, and to refer unresolved matters to him personally. He also ordered that harsh terms such as “compulsory enforcement” be avoided in family cases. The Sharjah Ruler emphasized that judges must have enough time to study each case thoroughly before issuing rulings. “This is not a simple task to be completed quickly, but involves the lives, interests, and responsibilities entrusted to the judges,” he said. He concluded by reminding the public: “We intervene in the smallest details concerning people’s interests — this is our daily priority. This is how people find happiness and injustices are removed.”
