Few may know that Sharjah’s skyline is dotted with architectural masterpieces that began as sketches by the emirate’s Ruler, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. The latest in this line of visionary projects is the new Sharjah Sports City, a mega-development designed personally by Dr. Sheikh Sultan, highlighting his engineering acumen and deep involvement in the emirate’s growth. Dr. Sheikh Sultan, who holds a degree in agricultural engineering, has long been recognized for his multifaceted talents. Not only is he a poet and author, but his contributions to Sharjah’s infrastructure are also well-documented. It was the ruler who sketched the initial design for the Sharjah Airport. Sharjah Sports City gets royal touch

His hand-drawn sketches served as the blueprint for this state-of-the-art development, which will cater to a wide range of sports and provide world-class facilities. The Sports City’s location has been carefully selected by Dr. Sheikh Sultan himself to ensure accessibility from all parts of Sharjah. The development will be connected by four main roads, each leading from different parts of the emirate, converging at a central square. The Sports City is a part of Sheikh Sultan’s broader vision for Sharjah, which includes promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among residents and positioning the emirate as a leader in sports and culture. This project is set to become an iconic landmark, representing the best of Sharjah’s past, present, and future. In line with Sharjah’s commitment to sustainability, the Sports City will incorporate eco-friendly features, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The design reflects the agility and strength of a falcon, symbolizing the attributes of athletes and the emirate’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage.

Sharjah Sports City Stadium

At the heart of the project is the Sports City Stadium, designed to resemble the natural landscape of the UAE. The stadium will feature a platform and grandstand inspired by the country’s sand dunes, with a cover designed to mimic a bird’s wings. SUPPLIED Sheikh Sultan’s engineering background is evident in the stadium’s design, which includes advanced cooling systems to ensure the comfort of spectators. The air-conditioned seats, equipped with built-in cooling pipes, are designed to provide a pleasant experience even during the hot summer months. The construction of the Sports City Stadium is set to begin soon, with the initial phase focusing on the stadium itself. The project is being fast-tracked to ensure it can serve the emirate’s sports sector as soon as possible.

Plans for the future

The Sports City is just the beginning of a larger vision for Sharjah’s development. Sheikh Sultan’s plans include four additional sports complexes that will cater to a variety of disciplines, further establishing Sharjah as a hub for sporting excellence while boosting the emirate’s economy, attract tourism, and provide a venue for major sports events.
