A new heritage-inspired marketplace has opened in Al Dhaid, offering visitors a chance to shop, dine and experience traditional Emirati culture in a modern yet historically rooted setting. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi inaugurated Souq Sharia’t Al Dhaid on Saturday (February 7). The market is strategically located near Falaj Al Dhaid and Sharia’t Al Dhaid, positioned between Al Dhaid Fort and the restored Al Mudarissa Tower. Its location places it at the heart of a growing heritage tourism corridor within the oasis. The site itself carries deep historical significance. In the past, it served as a major stop for travelling convoys that would rest, replenish water supplies and stock up on food before continuing their journeys. It also functioned as an important meeting point that connected Al Dhaid with surrounding regions through historic trade routes. The newly developed market covers a total area of 3,186 square metres and includes 34 retail units on the ground floor. Visitors will find restaurants and cafés alongside shops run by local residents selling home-made products, heritage items and traditional crafts. International brands are also present, creating a blend of old and new. Two seating areas at the central entrance allow visitors to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional souq. The architectural design reflects the desert environment and local culture. Its arched entrance and extensive wooden elements are inspired by traditional Emirati construction methods, including “arish” palm-frond structures that demonstrate harmony between the building and its natural surroundings. One of the souq’s most distinctive features is a dedicated camel track running alongside the market. Measuring eight metres wide and 450 metres long, the track is designed to host camel races and camel beauty contests organised in the area, adding a cultural and sporting dimension to the visitor experience. An arcade overlooking Sharia’t and Falaj Al Dhaid offers scenic views of palm trees and flowing water, allowing visitors to reflect on the region’s agricultural heritage. Modern infrastructure ensures convenience and accessibility. The development includes 595 parking spaces, dedicated areas for people with disabilities and electric vehicle charging stations. More than 900 metres of roads have been paved, while pedestrian walkways and crossings have been designed to enhance safety and create a secure environment for both vehicles and visitors. Souq Sharia’t Al Dhaid represents a significant boost to the region’s economic and social landscape. It supports productive families, small businesses and youth-led enterprises while providing a sustainable platform for promoting local products and traditional crafts.
