Sharjah to spend Dh107 million in mosque construction, maintenance
SHARJAH – After opening the largest mosque in the emirate this month, Sharjah has inked a new deal worth Dh107 million for the maintenance and construction of new mosques.
The budget will also cover the construction of homes for imams and muezzins.
The Sharjah Directorate of Public Works has partnered with the Islamic Affairs Department to undertake the construction and maintenance of mosques in Sharjah.
The project is part of the directives of Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Sharjah will see the construction of several model mosques characterised by their Islamic styles, in line with the urban development of the emirate.
Engineer Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SPWD, said that the expansion of the mosques is part of the government's plans to keep pace with the population growth across the emirate and provide decent and suitable housing for imams and muezzins across various mosques.
On May 10, the Sharjah ruler
opened to the public the Sharjah Mosque in Al Tay at the intersection of Emirates Road and Maliha Road.
The mosque covers an area of 186,000 square metres and can accommodate up to 25,000 people. Non-Muslims are welcome to visit the mosque.
