Sharjah supermarket under fire for selling chicharon

  DUBAI – A supermarket in Sharjah’s Khor Fakkan is under investigation after municipality inspectors found that the store was selling chicharon, or pork skin cracklings. Chicharon is a snack popular among Filipinos, but the food product is banned in Sharjah, which deems the sale of pork and alcohol illegal. “An investigation was immediately launched, and the product was taken for testing at the municipality’s laboratory,” Fawzia Rashid Al Qadi, director of Khor Fakkan Municipality, was quoted as saying by local Arabic newspapers. Al Qadi said that the product has been taken off the supermarket’s shelves and that legal action will be taken against the supplier. The supermarket owner was also fined. In the UAE, pork products may only be sold in supermarkets' non-halal sections. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular, supermarkets need to have a permit to sell pork products.
