Got a modified car? Watch out in Sharjah

SHARJAH – Cars whose engines and horns have been modified to create more noise will be the focus of an intensified crackdown in Sharjah, police said. Sharjah Police have already seized 81 vehicles found to have violated modification standards set by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA). The move came after His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, ordered the Sharjah Police to go after motorists who have illegally tampered with their vehicles and reckless drivers. Intensified police inspections will focus on modified engines, silencers and horns, said Major General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police. "If they have been changed without permission, and if drivers are threatening the lives of other road users, or hindering traffic movement, the cars will be confiscated and owners will have to pay," Al Shamsi said. He added that additional police patrols have been dispatched to catch lawbreakers. An ongoing police crackdown has also resulted in the confiscation of 419 cars used in dangerous stunts. Authorities are also keeping an eye on car workshops to ensure that they abide by Esma's vehicle modification procedures. Workshops found to be modifying vehicles without permit will be shut down, according to the Sharjah Economic Development Department.
