Sharjah is set to witness the rise of a new Sports City, a visionary project personally designed by Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. This ambitious development, strategically located at a site chosen by the ruler himself, will feature state-of-the-art facilities catering to both team and individual sports, solidifying Sharjah’s reputation as a hub for sporting excellence. The announcement of the project was made by Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Head of the Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), during an interview on the "Direct Line" program on Sharjah Radio and Television. Al Suwaidi revealed that the design for the Sports City was sketched by the Ruler of Sharjah, showcasing his hands-on involvement and dedication to the emirate’s development. Dr. Sheikh Sultan's personal involvement in the design process underscores his deep connection to Sharjah's development. The ruler’s background in agricultural engineering and his passion for architectural design are evident in the meticulous planning of the Sports City, which aims to blend modern infrastructure with the emirate's cultural and natural heritage.

Central design of Sports City

The centerpiece of the new Sports City will be the "Sports City Stadium," an architectural marvel inspired by the natural landscape of the UAE. The stadium's design, which includes a platform and grandstand resembling the undulating sand dunes of the region, will feature a large cover shaped like a bird with outstretched wings. This cover is designed to change color with the time of day—silver in the morning and golden-red in the evening—creating a dynamic and visually stunning structure. Sports City will incorporate eco-friendly features that harmonize with the natural environment. The design reflects the agility and strength of a falcon, symbolizing the attributes of athletes, and integrates advanced cooling systems to ensure comfort for spectators. The air-conditioned seats will include built-in cooling pipes, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

Phase one of Sports City

The construction of the Sports City Stadium marks the first phase of the project. Al Suwaidi emphasized that the stadium is designed to meet the highest standards required for hosting local, regional, and international sports events, positioning Sharjah as a key player in the global sports arena. While the stadium is the focal point of the initial phase, the Sports City will eventually expand to include four sports complexes. These complexes will cater to a variety of sports, providing world-class facilities for both professional athletes and local sports enthusiasts. The Sports City will be accessible via four main roads, each leading from different parts of the emirate, including Al Madam, Al Badayer, Mahafiz, and Al Bataeh. These roads will converge at a central square, making the stadium easily reachable from all directions. Al Suwaidi announced that the detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium are being finalized, with construction set to begin soon.
