Sir Bu Nair Island in Sharjah has officially been included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List, solidifying its status as a global model for biodiversity and sustainable management. The recent announcement by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) highlights the UAE’s dedication to environmental preservation. “This achievement reflects Sharjah’s unwavering commitment to sustainability,” said Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA. She commended local and international stakeholders who contributed to the island’s recognition. Known for its rich biodiversity, the 13-square-kilometer island serves as a sanctuary for rare seabirds and marine life. Its golden beaches and thriving coral reefs make it a crucial habitat in the Arabian Gulf. Declared a nature reserve in 2000, Sir Bu Nair Island has earned multiple international accolades, including inclusion in UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Its strategic location and ecological importance make it a focal point for regional conservation efforts. The IUCN Green List certification, valid until December 2029, emphasizes the island’s effective management and adherence to global sustainability standards. “This designation underscores our role as a leader in environmental innovation,” Al Suwaidi said.
