Dubai government employees will shift to remote work on Friday (December 19) as the emirate braces for unstable weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, announced the directive, saying that the work-from-home arrangement applies to all Dubai government employees, except those whose roles require on-site presence to ensure continuity of essential services. The decision comes as weather authorities forecast challenging conditions across the country over the next few days. The National Centre of Meteorology has said the weather is expected to remain unstable until Friday, with yellow and orange weather warnings currently in place over the Dubai coastline. In line with the public sector directive, Sheikh Hamdan also encouraged private sector companies to adopt remote working arrangements wherever possible to prioritise safety during the adverse weather. The announcement also follows guidance from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, which has urged companies across the UAE to be cautious and take all necessary precautions at work on Thursday (December 18) and Friday. The ministry emphasised the importance of protecting workers’ health and safety, particularly those working at outdoor sites where operations may be affected by rain and strong winds. MoHRE also stressed the need for employers to ensure that occupational health and safety standards are met, both at work sites and during employees’ commutes, as wet and slippery conditions could increase risks. As residents prepare for the stormy weather, Dubai Police issued a citywide text alert on Thursday morning warning the public to avoid beaches, refrain from sailing, stay away from valleys and areas prone to flash floods, and strictly follow official safety instructions. Motorists were also advised to drive with extra caution as water is expected to accumulate on roads, making driving conditions more hazardous. Dubai Police urged drivers to check that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling, particularly tyres, brakes, windscreen wipers and lighting systems. Drivers have been reminded to remain especially careful on external roads, bends and low-lying areas where water tends to collect, and to adjust their speed to suit road conditions. Authorities have repeatedly called on residents to stay informed through official channels and to cooperate fully with safety advisories as the UAE experiences the latest spell of unsettled weather.
