Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has directed the expansion of Flame Tree planting across Dubai’s streets, homes, parks and recreational areas. The initiative was announced during a meeting involving Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation. Sheikh Hamdan also shared a video celebrating the Flame Tree, known for its wide canopy, green foliage, and fiery orange blossoms that bloom across Dubai from May until the end of July. “In summer, when the Flame Tree blooms in Dubai, it brings life to every home, every majlis, every street, and every park,” Sheikh Hamdan said. “With it, our city blooms, full of life and beauty.” As part of the initiative, Sheikh Hamdan directed authorities to distribute Flame Tree seedlings to residents interested in planting the trees at their homes or farms. Residents can request seedlings through Dubai Municipality by calling 800900 or contacting the municipality through email. The Flame Tree has become increasingly popular in Dubai due to its adaptability to the emirate’s climate and its environmental benefits. According to officials, the tree grows rapidly during its early years and naturally develops a large canopy without requiring extensive maintenance. Its branches can spread up to 15 metres wide, helping provide shade and reduce surrounding ground temperatures by approximately five degrees Celsius. Authorities said the tree is particularly suited to Dubai’s hot and humid conditions due to its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in sandy and clay-based soil. The tree can live between 40 and 60 years and may grow up to 12 metres tall once fully mature. Urban greening initiatives have become a major focus in Dubai as authorities continue efforts to increase green spaces, improve environmental sustainability, and enhance residents’ quality of life. Officials said the long lifespan of the Flame Tree means trees planted today could continue benefiting future generations for decades.
