Dubai ruler orders rush aid for Ukraine civilians

  DUBAI - Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered emergency humanitarian relief planes to aid citizens escaping Ukraine's crisis. The two flights carrying crucial assistance items departed from Dubai and Sharjah airports, organized by the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai. The first aid and assistance shipment, which flew from Dubai to Warsaw, Poland, was carried out by Emirates airline's Boeing 777-ER Cargo plane. This aid, which was delivered through the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), the International Medical Corps (IMC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Fittest, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other aid organizations, is expected to benefit around 50,000 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, dispatched the second Aramex Airline B747F Cargo flight from Sharjah to Liege, Belgium. Around 35,000 people should benefit from the relief materials. The additional aid comes on top of the aircraft dispatched by the UAE on March 7 as part of its emergency relief efforts in Ukraine to assist civilians. “UNHCR is proud of its strategic partnership with IHC in Dubai, and we appreciate this important contribution which represents the generosity of the Government of the UAE and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
