Sheikh Mohammed rescues stranded cyclists in Dubai desert
DUBAI – A Dubai resident has shared her story of being stranded in Al Qudra desert and being saved by a stranger who she later recognized as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Kayleigh Hutchinson told LovinDubai that the incident happened last November when she and her two female friends headed to Al Qudra for a 50k cycle.
Hutchinson said the trio had passed the 10k sign on the bicycle track when the sun set and she found herself veering off the track and falling off her bicycle.
It appeared that the bicycle chain had come off and needed to be fixed.
“At this point I started to panic, it was dark, we were 10k into the desert, the bike rental store was not answering the phone and to top it all off I was the only one with a phone, which was about to run out of battery. I fought back the tears thinking of the 6-mile walk back the way I had just cycled,” Hutchinson said.
Minutes later, the trio saw a group of men on bicycles and the headlights of a car coming towards them. They frantically flagged the group, who helped them fix the bicycle and also gave them bottles of water.
“Amongst all of the commotion I had caused with this twisted chain, I failed to take in my surroundings and realise who was stood metres away," Hutchinson said.
Then she heard one of her friends ask one of the men on bicycles, “Do I know you? ‘I do know you, you're famous aren't you?’”
“I then looked towards her and realised just as she said, ‘You're Sheikh Mohammed aren't you?’” she recounted.
Hutchinson said that she asked Sheikh Mohammed if he visited the area often and that the Dubai ruler had answered that he does and that he enjoys cycling and running during cooler weather.
Of course the trio asked to have a photo with Sheikh Mohammed, who obliged.
“Finally, the bike was fixed, we were all handed energy drinks and said our thanks and goodbyes.
