Ship fire in Jebel Ali Port: captain, ship owners jailed in Dubai

The Asian captain of a ship that caught fire and caused a massive blaze at the Jebel Ali Port has been sentenced to jail for negligence. The Dubai Misdemeanours and Violations Court also sentenced four ship owners and operators. The captain, ship owners and operators will serve one month in jail with a three-year suspended sentence. Four shipping companies, including the company that owned the ship that caught fire, were fined Dh100,000 each. They will be facing a separate civil lawsuit. The case dates back to July 2021 when a fire broke out in one of the ships docked at Jebel Ali Port. The fire injured several Asian sailors and caused losses of Dh24 million after damaging several port machines as well as containers with various materials. A Dubai Police investigation revealed that the fire on the ship was caused by negligence. The ship was carrying containers of “dangerous materials” that were kept under the sun in Jebel Ali Port for 21 days during temperatures of 44°C. The report indicated that the ship was carrying containers loaded with 640 barrels of dangerous materials, and that the cargo shipper and ship owners failed to coordinate on the timely delivery of the containers. Investigators found out that the ship captain, owners and operators also did not register the materials that the ship was carrying, and placed the containers adjacent to each other, which resulted in the explosion of one of the containers and subsequent fire.
