Silver coins from 5,000 years ago discovered in Sharjah
DUBAI – A treasure trove of hundreds of silver coins from more than 5,000 years ago has been unearthed in Sharjah, authorities revealed. Archaeologists recovered 409 silver coins from a pottery jar found in Mleiha in February. Mleiha was a centre of commerce and trade in the Arabian Peninsula. According to Sharjah Archaeology Authority, the coins date back to the third century BC, with some of the coins featuring unique designs, including those that depict Alexander the Great and Zeus, the Greek god.
“When this heavy pottery jar was discovered, it was suspected that it would contain rare artefacts,” said Sabah Aboud Jasim, director general of Sharjah Archaeology Authority.
“Upon carefully opening the pot at the Sharjah Archaeology Authority laboratory, we found it completely filled with numerous silver coins,” Jasim said.
