The world-famous Sinulog Festival 2026 officially opened in Cebu City on Friday (January 9), bringing faith, culture and colour together once again — from Cebu to Filipino communities around the world. A solemn mass was held at the Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest church in the Philippines. The opening mass was presided over by Monsignor Agustin Velez Ancajas, who urged devotees to deepen their heartfelt devotion to the Santo Niño. The religious ceremony was followed by a launch parade attended by Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, city officials, members of the Sinulog Board of Trustees, the reigning Sinulog Festival Queen and participating dance contingents. Participating groups included Abellana National School, Cebu Aeronautical Technical School, Cebu Doctors University, Cebu Institute of Technology–University, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Technological University, Indiana Aerospace University, Lapu-Lapu Cebu International College, Mandaue School for the Arts, Mandaue Science High School, Mir Mir Performing Arts, Salazar iCollege of Science and Institute of Technology, University of Cebu, University of San Carlos, University of San Jose–Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation and University of the Visayas. Festivities continued at the Sinulog Grand Stage inside the Cebu City Sports Center, featuring Sinulog Idols performances and the main dance presentation capped by a fireworks display. The highlight of the celebration, the Sinulog Grand Parade, will take place on January 18, starting at 8:30am (Philippine time) at the Cebu City Sports Center. Hundreds of contingents are expected to participate in what is considered the most iconic street parade in the Philippines. Sinulog is known for its vibrant choreography, elaborate costumes and rhythmic drumbeats that tell the story of Cebu’s religious history and devotion to the Santo Niño. Each year, millions of locals and tourists gather to witness the spectacle. Filipinos overseas also mark the occasion. In Dubai, members of the Filipino community traditionally celebrate Sinulog with a smaller-scale gathering at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where devotees wear colourful attire, carry images of the Santo Niño and share in the joy of the deeply rooted tradition.
