Temperature on UAE's highest peak drops to -5 degress Centigrade; residents rush to play in the snow   DUBAI - Emiratis were treated to a rare phenomenon yesterday as snow fell on Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest mountain, when the temperature there dropped to -5 degress Centigrade. Many residents drove up to the 6,268-foot peak to enjoy the snowfall, causing traffic to back up for several kilometers and prompting traffic personnel to close the road to the mountain. In Dubai, strong winds caused a crane along Shaikh Zayed Road to collapse, crushing four cars that were parked near it. Two of the cars exploded as a result of the impact. One person was hurt in the accident and was rushed to the hospital. The strong winds also spawned huge waves that crashed onto the road in the man-made Palm Jumeirah Island, spilling seawater on the nearby parking lot of the Atlantis Hotel. The National Center for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) registered a big drop in temperatures in the UAE "as strong winds of up to 80kph brought a cold air mass that blanketed the Emirates due to a low pressure in the south of Iran extending to the UAE and north of Oman." Meanwhile, Col. Firas Biel Hasa, head of operations in Dubai Civil Defense, said the crane fell on the Abu Dhabi-bound part of Shaikh Zayed Road. "The crane collapsed due to strong winds and unstable weather. The injured person has been transferred to a hospital," Hasa said. At the Palm Jumeirah island, huge waves crashed on the seawall and sprayed seawater on passing vehicles.
