The UAE has strict social media laws that could protect you against cyberbullies. All offences related to this matter are taken very seriously. Individuals found guilty of slander on social media will be subject to a fine ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh1 million, imprisonment for up to two years, or payment of compensation to the victim. Here are some social media laws you should know. 1. Social media users are prohibited from posting content that is offensive or disrespectful to Islam, the government, or its people. 2. Social media users are not allowed to incite violence or support terrorism. 3. Individuals are prohibited from posting false and misleading information about others. 4. It's against the law to send threatening messages, publish false information, or engage in cyberbullying. 5. Sharing of copyrighted material, pirated software, or other unauthorized content is illegal. 6. Individuals are not allowed to promote illegal activities or products on any social media platforms. 7. Hate speech is not allowed in the country. This includes promoting any form of discrimination or prejudice against people or groups based on their gender, color, ethnicity, or other characteristics. If you're a victim of slander, you can file a complaint with the authorities. You may also file a civil lawsuit against the person who made false remarks to seek compensation for any harm done to your reputation. 8. Breach of privacy is a serious offence. Posting photos of people without their consent is not allowed. Exceptions to this offense are: if the picture is captured at a public event, if the picture is of public figures or celebrities or if the publication of the pictures is permitted by authorities in the interest of the public.
