Filipino pride Sofronio Vasquez, the first Asian and Filipino to win The Voice US, marked a triumphant return to his roots with a sold-out concert in Cebu City on Sunday (January 19). The Misamis Occidental native wowed the audience at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, performing a repertoire that showcased his vocal prowess and deep connection to Filipino culture. “Daghang salamat, Cebu! It’s an honor to share this milestone with my kababayans,” Vasquez told the crowd, expressing gratitude for their overwhelming support for his first major live performance in the Philippines since his win. The concert, which coincided with the Sinulog Festival, featured Vasquez’s soulful renditions of hits like A Million Dreams, the song that clinched his victory in The Voice US. His heartfelt performance wowed the crowd throughout the evening. The concert also featured collaborations with local artists, adding a touch of regional flair to the event. Vasquez even performed a Cebuano classic, earning thunderous applause from the crowd.

From cruise ship singer to The Voice US champion

Vasquez journey from cruise ship singer to international sensation has inspired millions, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac of the Department of Migrant Workers praised Vasquez as an emblem of hope for OFWs when he performed at the DMW’s Mandaluyong office on January 13. “Sofronio’s voice carries the dreams and sacrifices of every Filipino striving for a better life,” he said. Before fame, Vasquez spent years performing on cruise ships to support his family. “It was a challenging yet rewarding time. My fellow Filipino crew members and I always found ways to uplift each other and celebrate our culture,” he shared. His journey took a dramatic turn when he joined The Voice US, winning over audiences and judges with his emotional performances. His finale song, A Million Dreams, resonated with millions of viewers, earning him the title and propelling him into the global spotlight. Now signed with Republic Records under Universal Music Group, Vasquez has been approached by celebrities eager to collaborate. “I’ve been so blessed. There’s even talk of a duet with Michael Bublé,” he said, still marveling at his success. Vasquez is also preparing for his first-ever concert in Dubai, scheduled for May. Organized by Luxurist CBM House Events, the concert promises to celebrate dreams and resilience. “This is not just for the UAE but for the entire Middle East. His story proves no dream is too big,” event organizer JM Palmares Avelino told Expat Media.
