Something fishy in Ras Al Khaimah air

DUBAI – Residents near two areas in Ras Al Khaimah have cried foul over a stench coming from the beach. What caused it? Fish being dried at Al Rams and Halila, according to the Environment Protection and Development Authority. Fishermen have been drying fish locally known as Uma on the beach before packing them in plastic bags to be sold as farm fertilisers or livestock animal fodder. While the fish dry on the beach, however, a strong stench wafts from the area, causing residents of nearby places a lot of discomfort. Residents have said the problem regularly crops up, calling for bigger factories for drying fish and a ban on fishermen drying fish on the beach, according to a Khaleej Times report. Dr. Saif Al Ghais, director of the Environment Protection and Development Authority, said the problem will end soon when the fish drying season ends.
