Prime minister takes over post until court decides on fate of Park Geun-hye

  SEOUL - South Korea's National Assembly on Friday voted overwhelmingly to impeach President Park Geun-hye over extortion and corruption charges. Her downfall came after sustained protests by millions of furious South Koreans because of accusations that she extorted money from companies with a friend and allowed the latter also to influence her decisions on government matters. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will take over Park's position until the Constitutional Court decides on whether to make Park's removal from office permanent. The tribunal has six months to come up with a decision. Hwang ordered the defense minister to put South Korea in a state of heightened readiness in case North Korea takes advantage of the unstable political situation in South Korea. In reaction to Park's impeachment, Washington said it expressed hope for a peaceful and smooth transition of power in Seoul. During a session of the National Assembly on Friday, South Korean lawmakers voted 234 to 56 to impeach Park, surpassing the needed two-thirds vote of the 300-member assembly for the impeachment of a president. There were seven invalid votes and two abstentions. Among those who voted for Park's impeachment were members of her political organization, the Saenuri Party. The country's Constitutional Court should decided by a majority vote within the next six months to permanently remove Park from office. The court would need six of the nine judges ro concur with the impeachment and if that is achieved, a presidential election will be held within 60 days. Park, once called the Queen of Elections for her easy wins for her political party, is the daughter of a military dictator who is still admired by many South Koreans for pulling the country out of poverty in the 60s and 70s. As the lawmakers discussed the impeachment of Park prior to voting, thousands of South Koreans gathered outside to demand Park's impeachment and when it came, they cheered.
