UAE sets course for Mars after sending first Emirati to space

DUBAI – Following the UAE’s successful foray into space, the country is setting its sights on broader heights beginning with a Mars mission in less than 250 days. Last week, Hazzaa Al Mansoori became the first Emirati to reach space. After an eight-day trip to the International Space Station, Al Mansouri landed back on Earth on Thursday (October 3). The UAE’s Hope Probe take-off next year on a mission to the Red Planet. It is set to blast off from Japan after rigorous test of the spacecraft. “Our biggest test is at the end of this month,” said Sarah Bint Yousif Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences. The UAE Mars Mission is the first by any Arab or Muslim country. The Hope Probe will take off from Tanegashima Space Centre in Japan next year. It is scheduled to reach orbit around Mars more than six months later in 2021. The Hope Probe will collect data on the weather in Mars, which scientists are hoping to use in order to tackle global warming on Earth.
