Angel Maria Villar, son Gorka accused of alleged embezzlement of funds

  SPAIN - Angel Maria Villar, president of the Spanish Football Federation and his son Gorka were apprehended by Spanish authorities on Tuesday on suspicions of embezzling funds, according to reports by El Pais and EFE news agency. Aside from Villar and his son, also arrested was Juan Padron, the federation's vice president of economic affairs who is also president of the regional federation for Tenerife, and Ramon Hernandez, the secretary of the regional federation. The four of them were collared on charges of alleged improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents as part of a probe by the Spanish government into the finances of the federations. The Spanish High Court told Reuters that one of its investigating magistrates and anti-corruption prosecutors were conducting the inquiry. Villar, 67, is a former international footballer and has been president of the federation since 1988. He is also senior vice president of FIFA and vice president of UEFA, Europe's football organization. Villar had been credited for Spain's dominance in world soccer in recent years. Gorka served as the director-general of the South American football confederation Conmebol before standing down last year following accusations by several Uruguayan football clubs of alleged extortion. Meanwhile, FIFA said in a statement, "we have taken note of the media reports concerning the situation of Mr. Villar Llona. As the matter seems to be linked to internal affairs of the Spanish Football Association, for the time being we kindly refer you (the media) to them for further details." UEFA, for its part, said it knows about reports regarding Villar, but declined from making any comment. Villar or his lawyers have not made any comment also. Spanish police began their investigation on corruption accusations against Villar and the others in early 2016 following a complaint from the Higher Council of Sport, the government's sports authority. The investigation gave rise to suspicions by state prosecutors that Villar "could have arranged matches of the Spanish national team with other national teams, thereby gaining in return contracts for services and other business ventures in benefit of his son." The prosecutors also said they suspect that Padron and Hernandez allegedly "favored the contracting of business" for their personal benefit. Meanwhile, the Royal Spanish Federation of Football postponed meetings to draw the Spanish football league schedule following the arrests.
