Spinneys promotes sustainability with shopping 'Bag for Life'

Locally-owned supermarket Spinneys is making it easier for customers to embrace the UAE's single-use policies at checkouts with the launch of its 'Bag for Life' shopping bag, made entirely from 100% locally sourced recycled plastics. Created in partnership with UAE-based recycling company DGrade, which collects and recycles plastic from UAE recycling streams, the new shopping bag is strong, practical, and convenient and has been made to last. Unlike most plastic bags, the 'Bag for Life' shopping bag contains no virgin plastic from fossil fuel extraction, only 100% recycled plastics. This latest Spinneys initiative forms part of its broader sustainability strategy, "Let's Do Better Together," a commitment by the retailer to close the loop on the plastics economy and reduce its impact on the environment for a more sustainable future for all. The high-quality and stylish 'Bag for Life' shopping bag has been designed with Spinneys' signature white and green colors and features two custom graphics of the ocean and desert dunes - a nod to the beauty of the country's natural landscape. The bag will be available for only AED 1 in all Dubai and Abu Dhabi stores from the first week of September. We removed all single-use plastic bags at checkouts, and from September will be phasing out single-use paper bags. Now we are going the extra mile with the introduction of this Bag for Life. Spinneys' new bags use as little as a tenth of the energy used to produce the same virgin plastic bag, meaning that Spinneys can reduce its CO2 emissions. It also means less plastic waste ends up in UAE landfills and as litter in public spaces." To encourage customers to recycle 'soft' plastic waste, such as single-use plastic bags, Spinneys will be providing recycling stations in several of its larger stores.
