Filipino expats show skills in chess, bowling and billiards

  DUBAI – More than 350 members of 17 Filipino organisations in Dubai and the Northern Emirates showed their sports skills on Friday (September 2) in the first ConGen’s Cup at the Dubai International Bowling Center. There were architects, engineers, teachers and dancers, among others, but for this day, they were all just sports enthusiasts out to have some fun. The event—organised by the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates—featured chess, bowling and billiard competitions. However, it wasn’t winning a trophy that mattered most. “One of the reasons we came up with this ConGen’s Cup was to reinvigorate the partnership and collaboration among the different organisations in Dubai and the Northern Emirates,” Philippine Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes told ExpatMedia.Net. “A few years ago we had a very active social scene as far as the Filipino organisations were concerned but because of stringent regulations from the local government on the establishment of organisations, some of the groups had decided to keep a low profile as far as events and organizing events were concerned,” Cortes said. Cortes said the consulate wanted to send a strong message that the “consulate is open to everyone, whether or not their organization is accredited or not.” “When we show the UAE community that the Filipino community is one and united then we could easily make ourselves more useful economically, socially, culturally in the UAE, which we call our adopted home,” Cortes said.
