Suhail star to rise above UAE marking the end of summer
The Suhail star is expected to rise above the southeastern horizon in the UAE and central Arabia, beginning at dawn on August 24, according to a UAE astronomer. According to local legend, the Suhail star (also known as the Canopus) marks the end of summer and the slow onset of cooler weather in the desert, making it the most anticipated star in the Arab world. “The emergence of the Suhail star coincides with mild weather and low temperatures with high humidity southeasterly winds blowing, forming low clouds along the eastern slopes of Hajar Mountains in Oman and the UAE, which may be accompanied by drizzle,” Ibrahim Al Jarwan, member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences said on Twitter. In the United Arab Emirates, Emiratis consider Suhail's appearance to be a sign of prosperity and all things good. The rising of the Suhail star served as the foundation for earlier UAE residents' fishing, pearl-hunting, and farming endeavors.
