Tokyo filmfest best actor Paolo Ballesteros is also best actor of Manila film competition

  MANILA - A documentary film about Filipino expatriate domestic workers in Hong Kong preparing for an annual beauty pageant was picked the best picture of the 42nd annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). It was the first time that a documentary movie, which earned a Grade A rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), was picked best picture of the filmfest. It beat seven other entries, including the Nora Aunor-starrer "Kabisera". With its best picture award, the producers hoped it will attract more moviegoers this time and will be shown in additional theaters as it has not been getting much audience and is exhibited only in a few cinemas. Paolo Ballesteros, who was picked best actor in the Tokyo International Film Festival for playing a transgender person in the movie "Die Beautiful", got the MMFF best actor nod. It is the third acting award for Ballesteros after he was also given a special jury award by the Kerala International Film Festival organizers. Irma Adlawan won the best actress award for "Oro", a movie about the massacre of four miners in a town in Camarines Sur province. Best director was Erik Matti for the horror thriller "Seklusyon", which also won five technical awards, best supporting actress award for Phoebe Walker, and a special jury prize for child actress Rhed Bustamante. It was a back-to-back win for Matti as he was picked best director in last year's Metro Manila filmfest for the movie "Honor Thy Father." Two MMFF 2016 entries - "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2" and "Kabisera" - failed to win any award but got best actress nominations for its lead actresses Eugene Domingo and Nora Aunor, respectively. This year's MMFF has seen independent films chosen as entries compared to previous editions when commercial or mainstream movies were picked to be shown for the duration of the filmfest, a big change welcomed by many moviegoers. The top four grossers of the filmfest are Die Beautiful, Vince and Kath and James, Ang Babae Sa Septic Thank 2 and Seklusyon. The bottom four are Sunday Beauty Queen, Oro, Saving Sally and Kabisera. The MMFF awarding ceremonies was held Thursday night at the KIA Theater in Cubao, Quezon City.
