In uncertain times, many residents in the UAE are looking for ways to support small businesses. But doing so responsibly can make an even bigger impact. According to Sally Maddison, founder of MINT Market, supporting local brands is not just about spending money. It is about making thoughtful choices that help businesses grow sustainably. “Responsible support goes beyond simply spending money,” Maddison said in a statement sent to Expat Media, highlighting the importance of mindful consumer behaviour. Across cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, small businesses often operate with limited resources, relying heavily on community support to stay visible and stable. One of the simplest ways to help is by buying only what you need, but choosing well. Independent brands often produce items in smaller batches, making each purchase more meaningful. Maddison also pointed out that behind every product is a person or small team managing everything from production to customer service. “Recognising the human effort behind these businesses can shift how we interact with them,” she said. Support does not always have to come from your wallet. Sharing a product on social media, leaving a positive review, or recommending a brand to friends can help small businesses reach new customers without the need for large marketing budgets. Community events also play a key role. Markets and pop-ups give small brands a chance to connect directly with customers, making them worth visiting even if you are just browsing. These efforts highlight how small businesses can act as connectors within the community; supporting not just commerce, but causes that matter. In the end, supporting small businesses is less about how much you spend and more about how thoughtfully you show up.
