Surveillance cameras in Dubai taxis drive happiness rate

DUBAI – Surveillance cameras in Dubai taxis and buses have helped drive up the customer happiness rate and dramatically reduced the number of accidents, according to a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official. The cameras contributed to pushing the customer satisfaction rating to 83 percent, according to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. More than 10,000 taxis in Dubai have been fitted with surveillance cameras as part of Dubai’s Smart City initiative, said Al Tayer as he announced the completion of 75 projects linked to Dubai’s Smart City and Artificial Intelligence Programme. The RTA also introduced a heat map programme that shows taxi drivers where there are high demand for taxi services. For buses, the RTA has implemented the Raqeeb system, which monitors the condition of 300 bus drivers and has cut down the number of stress-related accidents by 65 percent. The RTA has introduced the system in two Dubai Tram. A new system called Al Merqab has also been implemented to monitor six million journeys of limousine, Careem and Uber rides with the installation of 5,200 devices, Al Tayer said.

Bus lane monitors

The RTA has also completed the third phase of an automated monitoring system for dedicated bus lanes, improving bus on-time arrival by 20 percent and reducing the number of cars crowding Dubai’s bus lanes by 82 percent. Smart sensors have also been introduced in 15 pedestrian lanes in Dubai that helps allocate the right time for pedestrians to cross the road.
