A 30-year-old man has been charged with multiple counts of murder following a horrific car-ramming attack that left 11 dead at a Filipino community festival in Vancouver, Canada. The suspect, identified as Kai-Ji Adam Lo from Vancouver, faces eight counts of second-degree murder, with more charges expected, according to the Vancouver Police Department. Authorities confirmed that Lo, who has a history of mental health issues, acted deliberately, though terrorism was ruled out. The attack occurred on the evening of Sunday (April 27) during the Lapu Lapu Festival in the Sunset on Fraser neighborhood, an event commemorating the 16th-century Filipino anti-colonial leader Lapulapu. Footage showed the suspect’s black Audi SUV with a crumpled hood, surrounded by debris and injured festivalgoers. “This is the darkest day in our city’s history,” Vancouver Police said in a statement. Witnesses described harrowing scenes. Dale Selipe told the Vancouver Sun, “There was a lady with her eyes staring up, one of her legs was already broken. One person was holding her hand trying to comfort her.” Festival security guard Jen Idaba-Castaneto added, “You don’t know who to help, here or there.” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, visibly emotional, addressed the nation: “Last night, families lost a sister, a brother, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter. Those families are living every family’s nightmare.” World leaders expressed condolences. King Charles III said he was “profoundly saddened” by the tragedy. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he was “completely shattered to hear about the terrible incident,” while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called it “horrific.” The UAE also condemned the attack, affirming its "strong rejection of all forms of violence targeting innocent people" and expressing solidarity with both Canada and the Philippines. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities confirmed that the suspect had a "significant history" of interaction with police and mental health services. No motive has yet been determined. The April 26 festival featured parades, performances, and a concert that included members of the Black Eyed Peas. ICA/Expat Media
