Receding Tsanfleuron glacier near a Swiss ski resort reveals mummified remains

  SWITZERLAND - It's been 75 years since Marceline and Francine Dumoulin have gone missing and the husband and wife have finally been found. Marceline , a shoemaker, and Francine, a teacher, went missing on Aug. 15, 1942 after leaving their home to tend to and milk their cows in a valley, according to a CNN report. They never returned, leaving their six children wondering what happened to them. Last week however, the mummified remains and belongings of a man and a woman were discovered last week in the receding Tsanfleuron glacier by a worker doing routine maintenance at an altitude of 2,600 meters. The glacier is located near the border between Cantons Bern and Valais, not far from the trendy Gstaad ski resort. Lausanne University carried out DNA testing on the remains and confirmed that the man and woman were the Dumoulin couple. Bernhard Tschannen, director of Glacier 3000 resort, told Radio Television Swisse (RTS): "From afar, it looked like small rocks, but there were too many in the same place." Upon closer inspection, Tschannen said he noticed backpacks, watches, mess kits, a glass bottle and boots and then saw the black, almost-charred remains of the couple frozen close together and wearing World War II period clothes. Their bodies were then airlifted from the area. Police believe that the couple fell into a crevice on the glacier. Monique Gautschy-Dumoulin said in a RTS interview that her parents were headed to the valley on the morning of their disappearance. Monique recalled that it was a nice day and Marceline was singing. After their parents failed to return, Monique was left to take care of her younger siblings. Seventy-nine-year-old Marceline Udry-Dumoulin, the youngest daughter of the couple, told the Swiss newspaper Le Matin: "We spent our whole lives looking for them, without stopping. We thought that we could give them the funeral they deserved one day. I can say that after 75 years of waiting this news gives me a deep sense of calm."
