Taal Volcano erupts on October 26, 2025 in Batangas, Philippines. PHIVOLCS

The Philippines’ Taal Volcano is under Alert Level 1 after three minor eruptions on Sunday (October 26), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The alert means the volcano is in an abnormal condition and could still produce sudden steam-driven or minor explosive eruptions. Phivolcs reported that Taal recorded three small eruptions at its main crater early Sunday. The first, a phreatic burst, occurred at 2:55am and lasted about a minute. Two more phreatomagmatic explosions followed at 8:13am and 8:20am, sending ash and steam plumes up to 2,100 meters high. Phivolcs Director Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol said the volcano also recorded nine volcanic earthquakes and two tremors lasting up to 96 minutes within 24 hours. “At Alert Level 1, sudden steam-driven or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions can still occur and threaten areas within Taal Volcano Island,” the agency warned. Phivolcs also reported 436 metric tons of sulfur dioxide emissions and noted that no volcanic smog or “vog” was observed on Sunday. Taal has been showing increased activity this month, with over 229 volcanic earthquakes and 13 tremor episodes recorded from October 1 to 26. Located in Batangas province, Taal is one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes — and one of the most unique in the world. It is the smallest active volcano on Earth, rising just 311 meters at its highest point. What makes it special is its geography: it has a crater lake inside its caldera, which itself sits on an island within Taal Lake, making it the largest lake on an island in a lake on an island in the world. Despite its small size, Taal has a history of powerful eruptions. In January 2020, a sudden eruption blanketed nearby areas with ash and forced thousands to evacuate. Authorities continue to remind residents and tourists to stay away from Taal Volcano Island, which is a permanent danger zone due to the risk of sudden explosions and toxic gas emissions.
