Filipina in Taiwan to be deported over anti-Duterte comments

MANILA – Efforts are underway to deport a Filipina caregiver in Taiwan for posting “nasty and malevolent” comments against Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. In a statement on Saturday (April 25), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Labor Attaché Fidel Macauyag said the government agency is working on the deportation of Elanel Egot Ordidor for cyber libel. https://www.expatmedia.net/taiwan-rejects-deportation-filipina-anti-duterte-comments/2020/04/ Ordidor had posted videos against Duterte, which DOLE said “intended to cause hatred amidst the global health crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic”. DOLE said sharing and posting such videos are punishable under the Philippines’ cyber libel law.

Cyber libel

Macauyag said that DOLE officials went to Ordidor’s workplace in Yunlin Country, Taiwan to inform her “that her actions amounted to a crime for which she might be prosecuted both in Taiwan and the Philippines”. “Ordidor was cooperative and cordial at first and committed to delete all her uploaded videos against the President and promised not to do it again. She also promised to upload a video of her public apology to the President and to the people in the government at 9pm of the same day,” Macauyag recounted. “However, hours after the visit, several posts were seen on the POLO Taichung’ Facebook page from several fake accounts assuring Ms. Ordidor’s cause and further giving her assurance of support,” he added.

Fake accounts uncovered

The DOLE official said that they found out the Filipina had used several social media accounts under the names Lenale Elanel Egot, Mha Lan Dee, Linn Silawan and Hampas Lupa and belonged to a group “organized to discredit and malign the President and destabilize the government”. The Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Taiwan is in touch with the Filipina’s broker and employer on her deportation.
