Few takers of part-time jobs for Dubai students, school officials say

DUBAI - Although it has been more than a year since a new rule made it legal for university students to take on part-time jobs, there are few takers in the market, according to a report quoting university officials. In 2016, the Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA) announced a new regulation granting part-time work permits to students enrolled in academic institutions licensed by DCCA and want to take up jobs in any of nine freezone clusters. Education officials, however, said confusion among employers regarding the new regulation is preventing more students from taking up the offer. Niranjan Jayakumar, vice-president and business head of Manipal University, echoed the same sentiment. Jayakumar said companies could not employ anyone on student visa and are asking for a No Objection Certificate for employment from schools, which school authorities are not able to issue. Another roadblock is companies preferring to outsource jobs instead of taking students without work experience, said Amity University Dubai's Hussain. He believes, however, that the hiring situation will improve as the idea catches on. Manipal University's Jayakumar said the "earn while you learn" scheme has attracted more international students in Dubai, with the number of foreign student enrollees rising to 50 percent. At Heriot Watt University, 100 Chinese students have enrolled since the rule was announced, said Ammar Kaka, the Vice Principal.
