Tata Dayot: What it means to be a Filipino in UAE

  DUBAI – What does it mean to be a Filipino in the UAE? Rising up to challenges, says engineer Tata Dayot, chairman of the UAE-based non-profit group FilClub. "We excel in almost any field and we rise up to any challenge or situation," said Dayot, "because Filipinos in the UAE and in general are very talented and artistic... we are one of the top talented nationalities here". Dayot and her group are organising the upcoming Philippine Independence Day event in Dubai, one that she says Filipino expats shouldn't miss because it’s a chance to celebrate Filipino pride. She also revealed that the group has worked so hard to put together a day-long itinerary filled with cultural shows, competitions, entertainment and other surprises. "We are celebrating the achievements of our forefathers. We are now enjoying the freedom they fought very hard for. Even if we are miles away from the Philippines we should be very grateful to them and remember their noble act," Dayot said. Filipinos in the UAE have the opportunity to "gain a higher salary and the opportunity to improve ourselves and also support our families back home", she said. Being a Filipino also means being generous, she said. "We have a carefree, hospitable and generous spirit," she added. Dayot said that like many Filipinos in the UAE, she has spent a portion of her earnings funding the education of several relatives. "I have helped relatives graduate from college, even in masteral courses," she said.
