Agency issues warning ahead of effectivity of excise tax on products on October 1

  DUBAI – Federal Tax Authority director-general Khalid Ali Al Bustani on Wednesday cautioned restaurants, hotels and shops in the country against stockpiling softdrink and cigarettes before the implementation of excise tax on October 1. Al Bustani said the establishments would still pay taxes for the products even if they were bought and stocked before October 1. Al Bustani pointed out that restaurants, hotels and shops will be required to prove that they have paid excise taxes on any stockpiled goods, which will be taxed at 50 percent starting Sunday. He said any establishment that stores excise taxable-goods before October 1 is required to register and pay the tax on the goods stored. With the imposition of excise tax, reports said the price of cigarettes and energy drink brands will double overnight while the prices of carbonated drinks will go up by 50 percent. The FTA briefed journalists at the Ritz-Carlton hotel on how the tax will be levied and what retailers will need to do before October 1 to ensure that they are compliant with the new tax regulations.

Meanwhile, the FTA also revealed the following during the press conference: *Retailers must declare the goods as being imported as well as give a report on the quantity and the port of entry by using the platform on the FTA's website. The agency will not accept any paper tax returns. *Businesses covered by the excise tax are required to pay the tax within 15 days of the end of the month in which the importation took place. *On the registration process, Al Bustani said the FTA will do its best to "provide a simple, seamless and intuitive tax system."
